Choosing an infant car seat can be overwhelming. There are a lot of technical specs to consider, like safety features, weight limits, compatibility with a travel system, and whether there are any extras like a load leg. And the wide variety of child car seat options online and in the baby aisle at your local big-box store can start to seem like a lot to research.

In this article

“Infant car seats are designed to protect the littlest babies and keep them safe while traveling,” says Jessica D’Argenio Waller, a reporter for baby content at CR. “Babies aren’t just small adults, and infant seats are specially designed to safely support babies’ heads, necks, and spines as they grow.”

These seats offer a lot of convenience. “One of the biggest benefits is that using an infant child car seat simplifies the process of moving the car seat between caregivers’ cars, thanks to a separate base that stays installed in the vehicle,” Waller says. Being able to bundle one with a stroller as part of a travel system can also save money, she adds.

Consumer Reports has a detailed guide to choosing the right car seat that helps break down the essentials. For infants, you’ll want to focus on safety, budget, and ease of installation. Secondary factors might include the car seat’s total overall weight (this is the only car seat you’ll regularly move into and out of the car), the size (especially if you already have an older child in a convertible car seat or booster), and ease of cleaning.

The good news: “An expensive seat doesn’t mean the best seat,” says Emily A. Thomas, PhD, associate director of auto safety at Consumer Reports. “It may give you more nice-to-have features or premium fabrics, but it doesn’t equal better performance.”

Consumer Reports has tested more than 130 popular car seats, from Chicco to UppaBaby, assessing them for ease of use, crash protection, and vehicle fit. “We purchase every test sample at retail, just like consumers would,” says Michael Bloch, who tests car seats at Consumer Reports. “All testing is conducted by certified child passenger safety technicians.” Three infant car seats impressed us the most.

CR’s Top Pick for Infant Car Seats, below, is the highest-rated widely available model from our rigorous lab tests. We’ve also designated a Value Pick that earned a great test score and has a good price. And because not every family’s needs are the same, our Expert Pick is for parents who want an infant car seat that’s especially easy to install.

Top Pick for Infant Car Seats: Cybex Cloud T

The Cybex Cloud T is one of our highest-scoring infant car seats. Designed for rear-facing use with babies between 4 pounds and 30 pounds, this seat has excellent fit-to-vehicle and crash protection ratings. “It’s incredibly easy to install, thanks to rigid LATCH connectors, clear labeling, and a seat belt lockoff on the base,” Waller says. The harness is also simple to adjust without rethreading, she says.

Testers appreciate the anti-rebound base with a load leg. (CR’s crash testing has shown that a load leg can help absorb impact from crash forces.) The harness also includes a chest clip with SensorSafe, Bluetooth-enabled technology that sends updates and safety alerts to your smartphone.

The car seat can recline to nearly flat levels when used outside a car, such as in a coordinating stroller, to create a travel system. (As a reminder, child safety experts don’t recommend letting your infant sleep in a car seat when outside of the vehicle.) Other features our testers liked include:

  • No-rethread harness that grows with your child
  • Large UPF 50 canopy for sun protection
  • Seat covers that can be removed for machine-washing
  • Uses flame-retardant chemical-free fabrics

Keep in mind that the seat and base are both bulky and heavy, so it may not be the best choice for families who intend to move the base frequently between cars.

Our Value Pick in infant car seats for 2026 is a perennial favorite from a justly popular brand that’s practically synonymous with child car seat safety. Our Expert Pick is a great choice for parents who want excellent crash protection that’s exceptionally easy to use and install. Depending on your family’s needs and budget, one of these infant car seats might be right for you.

Value Pick: Chicco Keyfit

The Chicco Keyfit comes in under $200 and receives high crash-protection ratings in our testing, an extremely appealing combo for many families. “This is a straightforward, easy-to-install, budget-friendly infant seat with CR’s highest crash protection rating, [Best],” Thomas says. “Parents can feel good about this seat protecting their child while also not breaking the bank.” Other features our testers liked include:

  • Removable newborn insert that protects smaller babies
  • Handle can be in any locked position during travel
  • Easy click-in design with the base or a stroller
  • Integrated recline level indicators on the base
  • Single-pull LATCH tension that’s easy to adjust

Keep in mind that there’s no load leg. But for safety-conscious families on a budget, it’s hard to find a better value. There are different versions of this car seat. “Look for the ClearTex version for fabrics and foams free of harmful chemical flame retardants,” Thomas says.

Expert Pick for Best Easy-to-Install Infant Car Seat: Clek Liing

One of CR’s best overall infant car seats, the Clek Liing excels at balancing crash protection, ease of use, and vehicle fit. This car seat has rigid LATCH connectors and a load leg, which helped it earn top scores in our crash tests. A tensioning mechanism on the base helps make a seat belt installation blissfully easy for parents. What’s more, “the fabrics are free of harmful chemical flame retardants,” Thomas says. Other features our testers liked include:

  • Recline can be adjusted without uninstalling the seat base
  • Excellent ease of use and fit to vehicle
  • Canopy includes a mesh peekaboo window

While the seat is straightforward to install, the harness rethreading does require some careful routing. There’s also significant disassembly required to remove the seat and harness for cleaning.
